Hamlin Ridge Trail

Hamlin Ridge Trail” - Oil on Linen - 28" x 16" - 1990

Thirty years ago, Charles took several hiking trips to the north woods of Maine and Ontario. He made drawings at various locations in Baxter State Park, ME. Initial quick sketches became the primary source material from which he made landscape paintings for several years. This one, depicting a trail up one shoulder of Mount Katahdin, was built-up from consecutive layers of paint that have been sanded and re-painted over and again. Says Charles, “The resulting image is a collection of scumbled and glazed reconsiderations that felt, in its own way, as authentic as my original experience of the place.”
